Fear of the Dentist and Sedation Dentistry

Good Day!

Yesterday I had a lady in my dental chair who said she gets heart palpitations just thinking about coming to see me.  In a different context, that might make me feel “macho,” but in reality, she simply has a fear of dentists.  Most of us have a fear of something.  Research shows that almost 30% of our population avoids going to the dentist due to fear, and I believe it may be closer to 50%.  Not only are many of these people afraid of the dentist, but often they are also afraid to tell anyone about their fear.

Therefore, if you know someone like this, and most all of you out there do, be a good friend and encourage him/her to seek dental treatment.  Literally, take your friend by the hand and escort him/her to our office or another dental facility.  You must be their rock in such a situation and let them know you wish to help them.  Your friend will appreciate your concern.

As a dentist, I see lots of fearful people as patients who simply would rather avoid us.  All of my staff at Dental Care Associates of Spokane Valley understands fear and are willing to listen to every patient as an individual and do whatever is necessary to get your friend comfortable before any treatment is delivered.

At Dental Care Associates of Spokane Valley, we offer sedation dentistry, which can be a godsend for fearful patients.  If you want to be comfortable, get a lot of dentistry done in a minimal number of visits, and if you don’t want to remember any of the dentistry, oral sedation may be just the thing.  View www.sedationcare.com or just come in and talk to us.

We pride ourselves in being able to treat adults and children, complex cosmetic cases, and fearful patients.  Come in today and talk to us.  We can take care of your dental concerns in comfort.

We look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Dr. James G. Hood
